Big snook make epic fishing charters. We catch lots of big fish, but 40 inch snook are the Holy Grail. I finally took my good buddy, and former boss, out on a charter. We’ve fished together, against each other, argued, cajoled, competed and learned down here with each other for over 3 decades. Never about work, always over fishing! Now, today, both out of the construction game, and loving life, we crossed another milestone.
Toddrow, Chesapeake, Pompano frikin whacked some fish and put on a show for his buddy Dan this morning. On a day that featured multiple 28 inch slot snook, a big upper slot redfish , and a lifetime trophy.
It all started with the nice 26 inch redfish on a well skipped bait under the mangroves. 15 minutes later, creeping along the shoreline, Dan saw something in the water. ‘A fish’ he said, and they were both all over it up in the front of the boat. While I’m snickering mullet or needle fish to myself, while tying knots in the back. Suddenly, the drag ripped and Todd was into another fish. This one, a 28 inch snook.
Another 30 minutes later, way on down the line, I’m making up stories, Todd’s making up stuff, and we are both blending the perfect mix old old tales, lies and exaggerations from 3 decades, when Todd’s perfectly cast big pilchard disappeared in a boil and he set the hook like a Hank Aaron reverse swing.
Big old body twists around and rolls a couple feet deep, and we thought we saw bull red. Then his line starts peeling down the shoreline. Peeling. Then a huge head erupts. We all screamed GIANT SNOOK and off it went. I’ve never ever heard Todd yell, but today he started yelling at me to help with the boat, while I yelled at him over rod management.
Run after run, surge after surge. Huge fat neck head shakes. Chesapeake held tight, and 3 net attempts later the huge fat thick girl barely slid into my net! Yes! Click on the link here for the awesome finale!
34 years of fishing this area, from Pine Island, to the Shark river, stealing spots from each other, the OG Todd Geroy, and all kinds of of other adventures, we finally landed that giant snook together, and welcomed Toddrow to the 40 inch club!
